Signs of a clogged dryer vent
Use this checklist before you assume the appliance is dying. Many Erie-area “slow dryer” calls turn out to be airflow — not a failed heating element.
Checklist we share with homeowners
Time
Loads that used to finish in one cycle now need two — especially towels and jeans.
Heat
The dryer cabinet, nearby wall, or laundry closet feels excessively hot during a cycle.
Smell
A hot-dust or burning-lint odor that isn’t explained by a new shirt’s ink or fabric softener.
Outdoor airflow
Little to no exhaust at the wall/roof cap while the dryer runs (on a calm day).
Humidity
Windows fog or the room feels damp even with the door open.
Lint escape
Lint dusting the floor behind the unit or puffing from joints in the hose.
Quick checks you can do safely
Confirm the outdoor flap isn’t iced or nest-blocked. Make sure the transition hose isn’t crushed flat against the wall. Empty the lint screen. If those are fine and symptoms remain, the hidden duct likely needs brushing.
When to call us vs. an appliance tech
Weak outdoor airflow + long dry times → vent service first. Strong outdoor airflow + no heat → appliance diagnosis. Mixed signals → start with a vent inspection; our team will say if the dryer itself looks like the bottleneck.
